A contemporary Jewish journey of reflection, repair and renewal
A Spiritual Humanistic Jewish journal for Elul · prepared by Rabbi Frank Tamburello, Westchester Community for Humanistic Judaism · Elul 5786 · 2026
Ḥeshbon hanefesh — the accounting of the soul — is the work of the month of Elul, the thirty days that lead up to Rosh Hashanah. Rabbi Tamburello’s journal takes that inherited discipline and makes it honest for people who do not believe in a divine judge or supernatural forgiveness. Here it becomes an honest accounting of the life we are creating, and of the effects our choices have on ourselves, on other people and on the world.
How to use the journal
Set aside ten to twenty minutes each day. Each day has four parts:
The thirty days move outward: first what you can see, then the people you share a life with, then what you say you value, then the turning itself, and last the year that has not happened yet. Many days close with a humanistic practice and a Jewish value to carry — emet (truth), hakarat hatov (recognising what is good), aḥrayut (responsibility), ḥesed (lovingkindness), ometz (courage), kavod (dignity).

For each day of Elul: Psalm 27, adapted
It is traditional to recite Psalm 27 every day during Elul. The journal offers a shortened humanistic version:
Courage be my strength,
And Compassion guide my way,
In times of fear, may I seek what is good
And help bring it into the world.
